A glimpse into OKC's dynamic community development: The OAK
Oklahoma City is rapidly evolving as a premier destination for both locals and visitors, thanks to its dynamic developments and ambitious projects. One of the most anticipated developments is the OAK, an innovative urban village set to redefine the city’s landscape. The OAK promises to be a hub of activity, seamlessly blending residential, commercial and recreational spaces to create a vibrant community.
Stacy Schuch, general manager of the OAK, recently moved to Oklahoma City from Atlanta, bringing a wealth of experience in retail developments. “I had lived in Atlanta for a large part of my life, and I’ve seen a ton of retail developments all across the United States. And I can tell you the OAK is going to be special,” said Schuch.
The OAK will feature luxurious accommodations and residential spaces, including a 132-unit hotel slated to open in late August. This hotel will offer an amenity deck with scenic views of Heartwood Park. Additionally, the complex will provide 320 multi-family units, offering stylish and comfortable living options.
At the heart of the OAK is Heartwood Park, a green space designed for community gatherings and events. The park will host regular events, enhancing the sense of community and providing entertainment for both residents and visitors. This central park will also feature stunning sculptures by artist Brad Oldham, including the "Cloud Trees," which will shelter an intimate performance stage.
“It's going to be a smaller, intimate stage under a sculpture called “Cloud Trees.” And it almost reminds me of the Bean in Chicago, and then to compliment that, that overlooks the hotel,” said Schuch.
Developer Ryan McNeill heavily drew from the successful blueprint of the award-winning Avalon development in Alpharetta, Ga., in crafting his vision for the ultimate retail-based center at the OAK.
OAK will feature a diverse array of retail and dining experiences. In addition to established brands like Capital Grille, Pottery Barn and Williams Sonoma, new-to-market tenants such as RH, Tommy Bahama, Marlin Bar, Arhaus and Mesero are also joining the development. While some stores will debut this year, others, like RH (formerly known as Restoration Hardware), are set to open in mid-2025, further enriching the area's long-term appeal.
A key aspect of the OAK is its commitment to community initiatives and connectivity. The development plans to distribute surplus food from on-site restaurants to local charities, demonstrating their dedication to supporting the community. Additionally, the OAK will integrate with existing city infrastructure, connecting biking and walking trails to promote an active lifestyle. This focus on connectivity ensures that the OAK is not just a place to live and work, but a community hub fostering healthy and sustainable living.
Seasonal and themed events will also play a significant role in making the OAK a year-round destination. A temporary ice rink will be installed around Thanksgiving, offering festive fun through early January. The OAK will host a variety of music events and other activities, ensuring a lively atmosphere that attracts both locals and tourists throughout the year.
The OAK represents a broader vision for the city's future, combining traditional strengths with new, exciting developments. By investing in world-class facilities and creating vibrant, community-focused spaces, Oklahoma City continues to enhance its appeal as a top destination.
