Oklahoma ranks among top states for inbound migration as Sun Belt growth continues

Oklahoma is gaining momentum as more Americans relocate to lower-cost, high-growth regions.

The state ranked No. 9 nationally for inbound migration in 2025, adding approximately 26.4 new residents per 10,000 people. The ranking, based on net migration per capita, reflects where population growth is happening most rapidly relative to state size.

Much of that growth is concentrated in the South.

States like South Carolina (+79.7), Tennessee (+43.6) and Alabama (+36.6) are leading the nation in per-capita gains, but the trend extends across the broader Sun Belt. Once considered economically lagging, southern states are now attracting residents with a mix of lower costs of living, warmer climates, and expanding job opportunities.

Oklahoma is part of that shift, alongside neighboring states like Arkansas, and larger population draws such as Texas and Florida.

In the Oklahoma City region, continued investment in infrastructure, job creation and quality-of-life amenities is helping sustain that momentum. As the region grows, these factors play a key role in attracting new residents and supporting long-term economic development.

Population growth is a key indicator of long-term economic momentum. As more people move to Oklahoma, the state benefits from a larger workforce, increased consumer demand and greater interest from businesses looking to expand or relocate.
