Oklahoma City ranked No. 1 lowest unemployment rate in April among the 56 U.S. metropolitan areas with a population of over 1 million, signaling strength in the local economy. The metro’s 2.3% unemployment rate was down from 3.0% in March.

This distinction highlights OKC’s sustainable economy and stable labor market. A low unemployment rate often points to strong job growth, consistent hiring and economic momentum.

The April report marked the 45th consecutive month OKC has maintained an unemployment rate below 4%, the longest such streak in its modern history.

In comparison, Fresno, California, had the highest unemployment rate among large metros at 8.3%.

Unemployment statistics for April:

  • Oklahoma County reported 2.5%, down from 3.1%
  • Tulsa metro also stood at 2.5%, down from 3.1%
  • Statewide, Oklahoma’s rate declined slightly from 3.3% to 3.2%
  • Nationally, unemployment held steady at 4.2%

Across Oklahoma, unemployment in April was lower than a year earlier in 68 of 77 counties. Rates rose in six counties and remained unchanged in three.

These data points serve as an indicator of economic health. Low unemployment can signal that businesses are hiring, people are working and the local economy is expanding steadily.
