The first phase of construction at The Oak in northwest Oklahoma City starting this fall will include a 132-room hotel in addition to previously announced apartments and retail.

The Oak, to be built southwest of Penn Square Mall, is one of a handful of mixed-use developments being built or envisioned in Oklahoma City as younger generations seek experiences that combine work with retail, entertainment and housing.

The most advanced such development to date, Chisholm Creek, is spread out between Memorial Road and Western Avenue and includes a Top Golf, iFly, a Solo's Park and Pub that is a combined dog park and bar, several restaurants, a l   ake and fountain, shops and apartments.

A similar mix of shopping, restaurants, a hotel and a Whole Foods anchor Classen Curve along Western Avenue and Grand Boulevard. An upscale apartment complex, the Canton apartments, was close to opening when it was destroyed in a fire last week.
