Mission Chinese pops up at Lee's Sandwiches

On a trip home to introduce his son to his grandfather, James Beard Award-winning chef Danny Bowien decided to host a pop-up at Lee's Sandwiches on Sunday.

Usually when Danny, a graduate of Westmoore High School who grew up in the 405, is in town, word gets on the grapevine pretty quickly, but not this trip.

This time, he kept a low profile. Among Bowien's accolades was making the Best New Restaurants list with his Mission Chinese by Bon Appetit in 2011, but even current Bon Appetit Best Restaurant in America chef Colin Stringer, of nonesuch, heard from Bowien late in the game. On Sunday, Stringer wasn't in the back helping out, he was in line with his wife and newborn daughter with everyone else.
